Today, wheat fields and cattle herds have replaced natural prairie grasses and roaming buffalo in Kansas. It was in this once rowdy frontier territory that the Buffalo Soldiers, African-American cavalry units, patrolled the west. It was on the dusty streets and in the smoky saloons of Dodge City that Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp earned their reputations. And it was in “Bloody Kansas” during the spring and summer of 1856 that the agonies of the Civil War first erupted.
